About Ibiza- The History

Ibiza is a small island with a colourful history which most holiday makers and clubbers won't be too concerned with, which is fine, but for serious Ibiza lovers you've got to know where you came from to know where you're going- right!

Way back when

The island is said to have been inhabited since 3000 or 5000BC depending on who you believe- point is its been around for a while and seen a great mixture of cultures passing through over this time.

Its main historical characteristic from the early days is as a trade centre based around Ibiza port, built by the Carthaginians before Jesus' time. These early settlements were the origin of what is now Ibiza Town on the south of the Island.

After that we had the Romans, then the Visigoths (some Germanic bunch who fought with the Romans), the Muslims and the Catalans (Spanish) who apparently built the walls of the Old Town to keep out pirates!

More recently

The 1960's saw Ibiza start to boom with the 'flower power' revolution which saw stacks of forward thinking hippies from across Europe to descend on the baleric island, attracted by its laid back attitude, unspoilt natural beauty and probably its great weather!

The 70's saw the real arrival of the tourist boom which has essentially continued ever since. It also saw the opening of the discotheques which would define its history up to the present day. Rave made it big in the 80's, baleric house really emerged in the 90's and today an eclectic mix of muscial styles and people make it a massive tourist industry and one of the most facinating (and mindblowing) places on the planet.
